Overview
Until January 6, 2026, the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Pistoia hosts the traveling exhibition Flags of the Walking Routes, a unique experience celebrating the richness of Italy’s walking paths and the cultural heritage of our country. The city thus becomes a point of reference for lovers of pilgrimages, cultural tourism, and slow travel.
The exhibition, itinerant and symbolic, brings together around 100 flags. Each of them representi a different route among the major Italian walking paths. Every banner tells a story: from spirituality and age-old traditions to nature and local heritage. Walking among the flags, visitors can discover itineraries that highlight Italian culture, environment, and art, turning these routes into sustainable tourism experiences.
The exhibition began in May in Pistoia with the national conference “Jubilee on the Way: from St James to St Peter”, dedicated to pilgrims and associations. Afterwards, the flags continued their symbolic relay toward Rome, where they were displayed, strengthening the bond among the communities of the Italian walking routes.
Inside the Baptistery, each visitor can embark on an imaginary journey across Italy: from spiritual paths to nature trails, from historical and artistic itineraries to those linked to agriculture and craftsmanship. It is the perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to experience slow, mindful, and sustainable tourism while discovering the many souls of our country.
Thanks to the cult of St James and its position along the Via Romea, Pistoia reaffirms its historic role as a key stop for pilgrims and travelers. The exhibition thus becomes an opportunity for cultural and identity promotion, fostering dialogue between the city and the entire network of Italian walking routes.
The initiative is promoted by Feder.Cammini, in collaboration with the Municipality of Pistoia, with authorization from the Dicastery for Evangelization and the support of Anci Toscana and Toscana Promozione, as part of the closing activities of the 2025 Jubilee.
