Petralia Soprana

Overview

In the heart of the Madonie Mountains we encounter Petralia Soprana, a natural balcony from which to admire the majestic panorama. In fact, there are three belvederes in the village: the Loreto belvedere, from which one can see Mount Etna, Enna, Caltanissetta and the Imera river valley; the Carmine belvedere, from which one can see western Sicily towards Palermi; and the Piazza Duomo belvedere, from which one's gaze wanders towards Gangi and Mount Etna. Exploring the village, one is enchanted by its highest part, an ancient fortification, and by several fine buildings, such as the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto, the Municipal Palace, the two Palazzi Pottino dei Marchesi di Eschifaldo and the Church of the Salvatore. Not to be missed, however, is the Museo del Sale (Salt Museum), in the hamlet of Raffo: here there is still a salt mine that houses the museum with its evocative salt sculptures.
