Santa Maria Maggiore

Overview

Santa Maria Maggiore is a small town whose territory is part of the Val Grande National Park and whose origins go back centuries, before the year one thousand, when the inhabitants of other villages in the Vigezzo Valley decided to build a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven on the valley plain. From this first nucleus imbued with spirituality, the monumental village of the valley began to develop, which would be named Santa Maria Maggiore in honour of the church. This beautiful village, surrounded by beech trees, alpine pastures, imposing mountains and small lakes, has been the inspiration of important artists, so much so that its territory is also known as the 'valley of the painters'.
