Castagnole delle Lanze sits in the province of Asti, a few kilometres away from Alba, between the Langhe and Monferrato regions. The territory, situated at the centre of the Langhe Monferrato and Roero wine-growing area declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, is characterised by hills dotted with vineyards and hazelnut groves. Starting from the typical historical town centre, with its characteristic block pavements known as “sternia”, made from cement and stones from the Tanaro river, you can reach Piazza Giovannone and continue through Via Ener Bettica, with its porticoes formed by thirteen arches resting on solid support columns and painted by the artist Vincenzo Piccato, who chose to reproduce on them the colours of nature, the seasons, the vines and the local wine. The next stop is in Piazza Marconi, where you will find the 18th-century Parish Church of Saint Peter, an exceptional example of Piedmontese Baroque. In the nearby Piazza Balbo, where the ancient game of “Pantalera” was played, stands the Church of the Confraternity of the Battuti Bianchi, built in 1668, now deconsecrated and converted into a space for cultural events. Next, climb up to the Park of Remembrance, dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. At the highest point stands a panoramic tower, built in the second half of the 1800s by Count Paolo Ballada di San Robert, who would use it as an astronomical observatory. From here you can enjoy fabulous views from the Alps to the Apennines.
The park and tower are home to a museum itinerary dedicated to the Count of San Robert. Outstanding local products include the Moscato, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay wines. In 2010, to support local producers, the Administration launched the initiative “Adotta un filare” (Adopt a vine row), whereby anyone can adopt a stretch of Barbera d 'Asti vines and, in return, receive bottles of “Lanze” wine with a personalised label. Another typical product is the PGI Piedmont hazelnut. The towns’ events include the Barbera Festival, held on the first weekend of May, when the private courtyards of the historic centre are opened and set up to allow visitors to sample the local produce and, of course, the local wine, to which the festival is dedicated. In August, the musical Contro Festival is held, with the participation of numerous Italian singers. At the theatrical festival “Paesaggi e oltre” (Landscapes and beyond), organised in July and September, you can enjoy travelling shows throughout the town centre and plays at the outdoor theatres located at the towns’ viewpoints.
