Perched on a hill 430 metres above sea level in the Fiastra valley, Ripe San Ginesio welcomes visitors with a historic centre that retains several features of its medieval origins. The streets rising in a gentle spiral, the alleyways interspersed with stairways and slopes, the stone houses leaning against each other and connected by small overpasses create a cosy and fascinating environment, perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace.
In recent years, the village has found new vitality thanks to the reopening of workshops and craft ateliers that combine traditional techniques with contemporary design. Visiting the workshops means encountering the artisans, listening to their stories, watching them at work and discovering materials that take shape in expert hands.
To round off your visit, see how art communicates with the village thanks to the installations dotted around the streets and in the Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art, a collection of over three hundred works which grew out of the “Ripe” art exhibition. Along Viale degli Artisti, a series of iron and wood sculptures accompany your walk, while the Borgofuturo sustainability festival, tells of the community's focus on a "village-shaped" future.
Destinations here include the Leonina Fortress, which has stood guard over the village for centuries, the Church of St Michael Archangel and the country church of St Silvester, much loved by the locals.
In autumn, the "Fumi Cotti" food fair celebrates country traditions and also the local wine, San Ginesio DOC, animating the village with flavours, tales and atmospheres of yesteryear.
