Santuario Chiesa della Madonna dell'Ambro - Montefortino - Fermo

Overview

Nestled in the Heart of the Sibillini Mountains

Tucked away in the Sibillini Mountains National Park, the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Ambro is one of the oldest and most visited places of worship in the Marche region—second only to Loreto. Located in the town of Montefortino (province of Fermo), it takes its name from the nearby Ambro stream and sits at an altitude of 658 meters (2,159 feet) between Mount Priora and Mount Castel Manardo. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, it offers visitors a place of peace and reflection.

A Sanctuary Rooted in Faith and History

According to tradition, around the year 1000, the Virgin Mary appeared to a young deaf-mute shepherd girl named Santina, miraculously restoring her speech in exchange for her prayers and offerings of flowers. This event marked the birth of the sanctuary, which was gradually expanded and enriched over the centuries, eventually becoming the magnificent church seen today.

The current sanctuary, built in the 17th century and expanded over time, still preserves its original ancient chapel, visible through a large window behind the main altar. Inside, a stone-carved Madonna, seated on a throne, gazes benevolently upon the faithful. The chapel’s walls are adorned with ex-votos—heartfelt tokens of gratitude for blessings and miracles received over the centuries.

The "Little Lourdes" of the Sibillini Mountains

Often compared to the famous Sanctuary of Lourdes, Madonna dell’Ambro shares many similarities: both are set in a valley surrounded by towering mountains, with a river running through their history. Just as the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in Lourdes, here, the miraculous event involved young Santina.

A Journey of Nature and Spirituality

Beyond its religious significance, the sanctuary offers visitors an immersive experience in nature’s beauty. Nestled in a striking mountain gorge, it is surrounded by lush forests and rolling meadows, with the crystal-clear waters of the Ambro stream providing a refreshing oasis, even on the hottest days. It is an ideal destination for those seeking a perfect blend of spirituality and outdoor adventure.
