Church of St Sebastian in Rocchette: the Franciscan hermitage built amid the greenery

The Church of San Sebastiano is located in the Vigliano area, in the hamlet of Rocchette in Torri in Sabina (RI). It is one of the earliest mendicant settlements in Sabina — a Franciscan hermitage, born with the simplicity that the Friars Minor took with them wherever they went. Small, sober, surrounded by greenery.

The original core and the expansion

The exact date of its foundation is unknown. What is certain is that the original core dates back to the 14th century, and is linked to the presence of a Friars Minor hermitage. In the 15th century the structure was enlarged, with a narrow, elongated nave attached to the initial core. The two phases can still be seen today in the outer walls — the stone is more regularly cut in the presbytery area, and more uneven in the nave.

What to see inside and out

The façade is gabled, plastered, with a portal framed by a simple brick moulding. Nothing monumental. Inside, the single nave leads to a square presbytery separated by an arch and enclosed by a semicircular apse. The nave is covered by wooden trusses, while the presbytery features a masonry cross vault. The floor is made of old bricks laid flat, and a small bell gable completes the building.
