Overview
Starting in Porta Capena, near the Circus Maximus, the Via Appia Antica extended southwards with a smooth and linear path until reaching Capua and later Brindisi. In the first section of 4 km, the road is no longer visible and the main monuments can be reached through the modern Viale delle Terme di Caracalla and Via di Porta San Sebastiano. Once at the intersection with Via Ardeatina, at the height of the church of the Domine, quo vadis?, a long straight of the Roman road began extraordinarily well preserved and dotted with numerous ancient monuments that line the sides of the road. In this section of the Appian Way, which extends for 12 km from number 195 to Frattocchie, a hamlet of the municipality of Marino, there are the tomb of Ilario Fusco, that of Tiberio Claudio Secondo, the tomb of the Rabirii, the mounds of the Orazi and Curiazi, the mausoleum of Casal Rotondo, Torre Selce and the Mausoleum of Gallieno.
