Porta Napoletana in Priverno: the last gate of ancient Piperno still standing
Porta Napoletana — also known as Porta Posterola — is the only gate of ancient Piperno still in use. It stands in Piazzale Metabo, in Priverno, and is what remains of the series of entrances that once marked the perimeter of the city walls. People still walk beneath it every day.
An arch with two different faces
The beauty of this gate is that it changes depending on which side you look at it from. From the inside, the arch is pointed (ogival). Walk around to the other side, facing outward, and you'll find a round arch decorated with rusticated stonework.
Local stone, cut by hand
The structure is built from limestone blocks shaped and squared by hand. The arch is now isolated from the original walls that once surrounded it, yet it remains very impressive.
