Fountain of the Goddess Diana in Nemi: Mastrolorenzi's sculpture in Piazza Roma
The Fountain of the Goddess Diana is located in Piazza Roma, Nemi. Created by sculptor Luciano Mastrolorenzi and inaugurated in 2000, it depicts Diana Nemorensis, the goddess once worshipped at the ancient shrine situated on the terraces overlooking Lake Nemi. The bronze statue stands on top of a trachyte fountain, supported by travertine columns. A notable detail is the goddess's eyes, which are crafted from silver.
Diverse materials in a single work
Mastrolorenzi utilized a variety of materials for this piece: bronze for the statue, trachyte for the fountain basin, travertine for the columns, iron for the railings, brass for the decorative knobs, and silver for the eyes. This work masterfully combines different metalwork and stonemasonry techniques. The resulting optical effect causes the sculpture’s appearance to alter, depending on the light.
Diana Nemorensis
Lake Nemi was sacred to Diana. Her shrine, built on terraces in the valley, was one of the foremost places of worship in ancient Latium. This fountain serves as a modern tribute to that millenary tradition.
