The Church of Saints Philip and James in Civitella di Licenza: sacred art in the village of the Lucretili Mountains
Civitella di Licenza is a hamlet of the municipality of Licenza within the Metropolitan City of Rome. The Church of Saints Philip and James is the religious heart of this small village. The single-nave building preserves a treasure trove of sacred art, accumulated over the centuries: canvases, wooden statues in the side chapels, reliquaries and objects of popular devotion displayed in glass cases.
The interior
The high altar dominates the nave. In the lateral chapels are polychrome wooden statues and canvas paintings depicting religious subjects. The glass cases along the walls hold reliquaries, votive statuettes and liturgical furnishings, bearing witness to the devotion of the local community.
Background
The church is in the centre of Civitella, a medieval village that grew up as a fortress, within the Lucretili Mountains Regional Nature Park. From here, trails lead towards Monte Pellecchia and the Villa of Horace.
