Church of St Sebastian in Configni: the Candlemas church in the village on the border between Lazio and Umbria
The church of San Sebastiano is situated in the heart of the old part of Configni, a village of about 500 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, halfway between the Sabina area of Lazio and the Terni basin. It is a small, simple church, with a single nave, an antique terracotta floor, and a semicircular apse decorated with frescoes. Every year the Candlemas procession sets off from here.
Seat of the Confraternita del Santissimo Sacramento
The building dates back to the 16th century. For a long time it served as the meeting place of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. The structure consists of load-bearing rubble-core masonry, the most common technique in Apennine villages of this period: stone, lime and infill. The roof is a double-pitched timber frame covered with curved clay tiles.
The façade and the bell-gable
The front has a simple gable profile, and is largely plastered. At the base, the main door is flanked by two low square windows. Above, there is a bell-gable with a single opening — a small silhouette rising above the village rooftops.
In the summer the church also hosts concerts as part of the Piana del Cavaliere Festival.
