Church of the Most Holy Annunciation in Collevecchio: the church with two doors and two histories
In the historic centre of Collevecchio, the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata (Church of the Most Holy Annunciation) is a key attraction for anyone exploring the Sabina region. Its façade reveals a peculiarity that does not go unnoticed: two entrance portals, side by side. This curious detail hints at the story of a place with a dual soul — one that was born in the 13th century, but changed its face over the centuries. It still bears the marks of its transformations today.
One façade, two stories
The right-hand portal, the older of the two and decorated with figures of animals and plants carved in stone, was the entrance for the faithful. Above it, an inscription commemorates a restoration carried out in 1550. The left-hand portal, on the other hand, was added at a later stage. Its inscription, "Collegiata", reveals its function: it was the entrance reserved for the chapter of canons when the church became their seat.
An unexpected baroque style
The three-nave interior strikes visitors with its style, which stands in contrast to the exterior. The space has sturdy pillars supporting a large barrel vault over the central nave, while the side naves feature elegant sail vaults. Along the sides are the six chapels added by Antonio Carbelli in 1631, decorated with the bright white and sky-blue stucco work adorning the entire interior. On the high altar is a large altarpiece from 1786 depicting the Annunciation.
The church is located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. For opening hours and Mass times, it is advisable to contact the parish directly.
