Parish of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption

Parish of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption in Ciciliano: three naves and 16th-century paintings

The Parish Church of the Beata Maria Vergine Assunta in Cielo stands in the centre of Ciciliano, a village perched on a hill between Mount Guadagnolo and Serrone di Saracinesco, 49 km from Rome. The church was built in the first half of the 12th century, and stands a few steps away from Castello Theodoli.

From the building site to consecration

By common agreement, the Virgin Mary was chosen as patron saint, and the church was dedicated to the privilege that crowned the life of the Virgin Mother of God assumed into heaven. The current building dates back to 1795, when the church community rebuilt the church on a larger scale. The works were probably completed in 1818, as per the inscription above the entrance portal, which also recalls the 1867 consecration by Pope Pius IX.

Three naves and a painted vault

The layout is basilican: three naves without a transept, divided by round arches resting on rectangular pillars. The central nave has a barrel vault with tempera wall paintings — also present in the choir and the apsidal area — restored in 1951. The last bay, on both the right and left sides, features a dome covering. On the counter-façade is the choir loft with the organ. The church houses several 16th-century paintings. The façade, arranged in two tiers with a triangular tympanum, has a portal topped by a semicircular molding, and a rectangular window on the upper register.

Practical information

The church is located in Corso Umberto I, 8, 00020 Ciciliano (RM).
