Overview
The Village of the Biondo Tardivo
Trebisacce, a Calabrian village whose name means "small table" because it sits on a plateau, has a long history characterized by its strategic position overlooking the sea, with a possible retreat to Mount Mostarico. Once a necessary stop on the only communication route between Metaponto and Sibari, today it is known as the Balcony of the Upper Ionian Sea because its location allows you to admire the breathtaking panorama of the Gulf, between the crystal-clear sea and the surrounding nature.
The mild climate year-round is ideal for growing the Biondo tardivo orange, a particular variety of orange that ripens between March and May. A festival is dedicated to it in May. The curious town of Trebisacce is divided into an old and a new area and is surrounded by a wall built in the 16th century to repel Saracen raids.
Here you can admire the Mother Church dedicated to San Nicola di Mira, one of the most important in the city. Of great interest is the archaeological site in Broglio: artifacts from a Hellenic necropolis and Mycenaean remains have been recovered here. Also not to be missed is the Ludovico Noia Museum of Olive Oil Art and Culture, dedicated to Trebisacce's rural culture and its olive oil production.
