Overview
A settlement of very ancient foundation, Montegiordano, on the Upper Ionian in the province of Cosenza, dates back to the 4th century B.C.
The architectural symbol of the town is Montegiordano Castle, a prestigious estate listed among the Historic Houses of Calabria.
As demonstrated by important finds from the Greek and Roman periods and the excavation of an ancient Lucanian farm in Menzinàra, Montegiordano stands on a territory that has been inhabited since ancient times. Alongside classical archaeology, there are several historical and monumental sites of industrial archaeology that tell us a lot about this area. Two examples above all? The Castle of Montegiordano and the old disused cement factory.
The castle was built by the Pignone del Carretto family as a winter residence and hunting lodge. Today it is a charming location for events and an excellent wine estate (Tenuta del Castello), immersed in a landscape of great natural beauty. A monumental staircase and a round arch give access to the upper floor; a little further down the valley stands what was once the noble chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine.
Sea lovers can holiday in the seaside hamlet of Montegiordano Marina, one of the most popular beaches along the Costa degli Achei.
