Lettopalena

Overview

Lettopalena is a small village of medieval origin, which stands in a naturalistically peculiar context: in fact, it develops on large limestone blocks that were born from a landslide that occurred 5000 years ago, and these 'geological wounds' are still studied today all over the world. The settlement grew up around the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria di Monteplanizio and the majestic remains of the Cyclopean walls can still be seen around the village. Not to be missed, to be transported into a distant and mysterious past, are the remains of the former Church of San Nicola di Bari: rebuilt after the 1933 earthquake, it was destroyed during World War II. Today, suggestive ruins remain, among which lush flora grows, as if to remind us that life cannot be stopped.
