Lama dei Peligni

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Lama dei Peligni, in the Maiella National Park, between the Aventino river and the foot of its highest peak (Monte Amaro), is worth a visit due to its natural setting, its cultural and historical heritage and its food and wine.

The most notable natural attractions include the Grotta di Sant'Angelo, which can be found at an altitude of 985 metres above an impressive ravine in the Maiella massif, and the Grotta del Cavallone, also known as the Grotta della Figlia di Iorio (Iorio's Daughter), which is better known and linked to the figure of Gabriele D'Annunzio, and is one of the highest accessible caves in Europe. Meanwhile, in the village, at the Park Visitor Centre, you can visit the M. Locati Natural History and Archaeology museum, the M. Tenore Botanical Garden and, not far away, the Abruzzo chamois wildlife area, where you can also observe this acrobatic animal of the precipices up close. Both the botanical garden and the wildlife area also organise meetings, trails and educational activities.

The parish church of Santi Nicola e Clemente overlooks the scenic Piazza Umberto I, while the church of Maria Santissima della Misericordia (or St. Anthony's Convent) is located in the upper part of the village. At the entrance to the village, visitors will find Fontecannella, a 16th century fountain in white Maiella stone. Also of interest are the 16th-century Palazzo dei Baroni Tabassi and the 19th-century Palazzo Verlengia.

You can't leave Lama without tasting the sfogliatella, delicious puff pastry filled with grape and black cherry jam, with cooked must, walnuts and cocoa: a crowning glory of Abruzzo confectionery production. For a taste, you can go to the I segreti di Donna Anna confectionery workshop. Other traditional recipes include sagne a tacconi pasta, pallotte cacio e uova(cheese and egg balls) and pizzelle (waffles). In recent years, the importance of truffles has grown, and they are becoming more and more sought after and appreciated in their different varieties: the Elite Tartufi company is a well-known place for tasting and purchasing them in Lama.
