Alfedena

Overview

The village is dominated by the ruins of an early medieval castle, which, almost like an ancient acropolis, creates an impression with its large walls and octagonal Norman tower.

Finds from an ancient necropolis are preserved in the Archaeological Museum: bronze collars, rings, glass paste beads, amber necklaces, pendants, weapons and belts testify to the presence of a settlement already in pre-Roman times. In the Municipal Villa, a monument to the flint dresser celebrates the local stone-working tradition: the narrow streets of the town, paved with flint cobbles, as well as door jambs and external steps, speak of an uncommon mastery that brought the tradesmen of Alfedena to pave several streets in Rome, including St. Peter's Square. In addition to flint dressers, Alfedena was known in the past as a town of doctors: there were more graduates here than the average of the surrrounding Marsica region.
