Mount Iato Archaeological Area

Overview

The archaeological area of Mount Iato is part of the Archaeological Park of Himera, Solunto and Iato and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in all of Sicily. In this area stood the ancient city of Iaitas (or Ietas), founded by the Sicanians and then occupied by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims and Normans, thus witnessing a wide span of time ranging from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. The ancient city stood at an altitude of over 800 metres, in a strategic position that allowed both access from the northern and southern coasts to be controlled.

Among the most remarkable remains of the site are the agora, the Greek theatre with a splendid view of the valley, the remains of several houses and a spa complex, as well as a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Demeter. Greek theatre is in particular one of the most fascinating elements, well set in the landscape and positioned so as to offer a wide panorama of the surrounding countryside.

Archaeological

excavations have brought to light numerous objects of daily and religious use of the inhabitants of Iaitas, today preserved in the Antiquarium of Mount Iato of San Cipirello.
