Overview
Cessapalombo, in the province of Macerata, is a mountain municipality near the Monti Sibillini National Park.
Of medieval origin, it was mostly destroyed by the 1799 earthquake and rebuilt in various hamlets.
The castle of Montalto, dating back to the 9th century, has three walls to protect the lord, the soldiers and the people.
Among the many beauties of the place, the Church of San Benedetto, the Church of the Madonna della Misericordia, the Abbey of San Salvatore, the archaeological area, the Museum of the Carbonaie and our Land, the Grotta dei Frati, the old hermitage of the so-called "Fraticelli" persecuted as heretics, the Fiastrone Gorge and the Butterfly Garden are worth mentioning.
Montalto was the scene of the terrible massacre of 32 young partisans by the Nazi-Fascists and for this he was awarded the war cross for military valour.
Famous for the cultivation of cereals and pulses and the production of saffron and extra-virgin olive oil, Montalto is closely linked to the rich and wooded territory of the Sibillini Mountains Park, whose products have always influenced its cuisine.
Events include the Mushroom Festival and the Ancient Flavours and Riches of the Forest festival , which focus precisely on rediscovering and enhancing the ancient traditions of rural civilisation.
