Bomarzo

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Among the Cimini Montains and the Tiber Valley, in Tuscia, Bomarzo stands atop the lava rocks.

The village is a well-preserved mediaeval treasure, whose historic centre is marked by archaeological and architectural features of considerable beauty and interest. Worth visiting are the Orsini Palace, built in the 16th century in Renaissance style, and the Cathedral, where the body of the patron saint is kept.

Another must-see is the renowned Parco dei mostri, created by the literary and military leader Vicino Orsini. Surrounded by a striking and evocative atmosphere, somewhere between fantasy and myth, it was created in 1552 as the "Villa of Wonders": it comprises a set of gardens with buildings and sculptures depicting legendary animals and dreamlike characters.
