Do not miss the Sanctuary of Montagna Spaccata, on the slopes of the mountain and dating back to the eleventh century, from which you can enjoy an enchanting view of the gulf. But why is it called Montagna Spaccata (Split Mountain)? To understand it, you have to walk the staircase next to the church and descend through the narrow vertical fissure in the rock (produced, according to tradition, by the earthquake that shook the earth at the death of Christ), up to the Chapel of the Crucifix, with a very simple architecture, but sensational in that it is suspended over water! Another staircase descends between high rocky walls to the Grotta del Turco, also very evocative, which according to legend was a refuge for pirates, ready to attack the ships that approached the headland.
