From 12 to 14 May 2026, in Rome, the Ipogeo Necci will open to the public for an unmissable event dedicated to contemporary art, offering an immersive experience in one of the city's most captivating underground spaces. Located beneath the historic Bar Necci in the Pigneto district, this unique venue will host a vernissage featuring installations by José Angelino and Elena Bellantoni, the central figures in the third phase of the exhibition project entitled ‘Sottoforma’, which explores the theme of the invisible and is curated by Donatella Giordano and Agathe Jaubourg.
José Angelino’s installation Mosquitos transforms the space into an evocative soundscape composed of imperceptible vibrations and frequencies. Using a system of micromagnets and electromagnetic fields, the work generates subtle sounds that evoke natural phenomena such as Schumann’s resonance, offering visitors an innovative sensory experience on the contemporary art scene in Rome.
With Lucciole, meanwhile, Elena Bellantoni offers an emotional journey through memory and collective history. Inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the installation uses vinyl records and audio tracks to draw the public into an immersive narrative, making a visit to the Ipogeo Necci a moment of cultural and personal reflection.
The Necci Hypogeum is a genuine cultural attraction in Rome: dating back to the 1st century BC, over the course of time, it has served as a pozzolana quarry, a wine cellar and an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. Today, this historic space has been restored and transformed into a unique exhibition venue, ideal for those looking for things to see in Rome beyond the traditional tourist itineraries.
The exhibition programme is divided into three phases, making the Necci Hypogeum a key venue for contemporary art exhibitions in Rome in 2026. Following the installations by Eva Marisaldi, Enrico Serotti and Luca Vitone in March, and the works by Iginio De Luca and Liliana Moro which will be on display until 30 April, the May event marks the culmination of a programme dedicated to invisible and sensory art.
