The Hermitage of San Cataldo was built in the 10th century. Nestled neatly into the limestone cliff overlooking the road leading to Cottanello, the village that is home to it, the small chapel carved into the rock contains a Byzantine-style fresco depicting Christ blessing and the apostles (12th century); other frescoes date from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and depict holy bishops, two Madonnas and Child, and, on the cross vault, scenes from Genesis.
Cottanello sits on top of a hill. Its medieval walls are almost intact and, it is known for its quarries of red marble used in Baroque Rome. One kilometre from the village, in the hamlet of Collesecco, visitors can explore the archaeological site of a Roman villa, containing the vestiges of rich floor mosaics.
