Goldsmithing is one of the oldest and most refined artisan traditions in Tuscany, where the art of working precious metals such as gold and silver combines a millennia-old history with contemporary creativity. This knowledge, handed down from generation to generation, is one of the finest expressions of Made in Italy craftsmanship, a symbol of quality, elegance and artisanal mastery recognised worldwide.
A tradition that originated with the Etruscans
The goldsmithing tradition in Tuscany has its roots in antiquity: the Etruscans are considered among the greatest masters of goldsmithing in history, capable of carrying out complex techniques such as granulation, a process that reduces the metal into tiny grains then soldered onto a thin sheet to shape the jewellery. Their fabulous creations can still be appreciated in some museums in Tuscany, such as the National Archaeological Museum Gaio Cilnio Mecenate in Arezzo or the Museum of the Etruscan Academy in Cortona.
Fine techniques and workmanship
Among the main historical and contemporary techniques are granulation, a refined working of tiny metal grains; Florentine-style openwork and engraving, which create elaborate motifs on metal surfaces; lost-wax casting, used since the Bronze Age to shape precious objects; and stonesetting, a delicate process that secures gems in metal mounts. And finally, embossing, a technique for working metal sheets to create decorative reliefs.
The main centres of goldsmithing in Tuscany
The goldsmith tradition in Tuscany is particularly alive between Florence and Arezzo, the "city of gold". Alongside the more structured industrial realities, villages in the Arezzo area such as Sansepolcro, Cortona, Pieve Santo Stefano and Anghiari continue to stand out for the presence of numerous artisan workshops and small workshops, where the ancient techniques of manual processing are handed down with passion.
As evidence of the importance of the sector, OroArezzois held every year, a prestigious international event that enhances the excellence of local production and the most innovative technologies in the sector. Another point of reference is the Gori & Zucchi company museum, “UNOAERRE”, an exhibition route that includes a section on industrial archaeology and an exhibition of goldsmithing art spanning 75 years of production.
Goldsmithing as a cultural experience
