Pachino

Overview

So much for beaches, although the beaches here are not bad... Here are the greenhouses! At first – arriving by road from Noto – they are few and small, then larger and larger. They are reminiscent of ancient military camps awaiting the final clash, but we have only entered the production area of the cherry tomato, the round one, known in fact as the Pachino tomato, probably the most famous tomato in Italy.

There are vegetables everywhere. Not only in the fields, but at the roadside, sold in boxes placed on trucks, kept in the open bonnets of cars and arranged on the pavements.

Pachino town is a complicated maze of directions given at the last moment that zigzag here and there amidst the impromptu fruit and vegetable stalls.
