Teatro Massimo Bellini

Overview

The elegant theater of the city of Catania between music and beauty

Inaugurated in 1890, Massimo Bellini Theater can be considered the driving force of music life in Catania as well as a Sicilian wonder. It is located in Piazza Vincenzo Bellini. It has a capacity of about 1200 seats and perfect acoustics. Every year, it hosts an opera and ballet season, a symphonic season and a chamber season. Rich in decorations and allegorical symbols that bestow an elegant style to the building, the theater’s ceilings were frescoed by Ernesto Bellandi with Bellini's Apotheosis where the protagonists are the recurring figures of his major artworks: Norma, The Sleepwalker, The Puritans and The Pirate. The beautiful historical curtain that illustrates the Victory of the people of Catania over the Libyans, a masterpiece by artist Giuseppe Sciuti, is indeed worthy of attention. This theater is the perfect location to enjoy the many concerts and shows that take place there every year, but it is also interesting to tour to admire its artistic and architectural wonders.
