Overview
Perched overlooking the Adriatic, from the village of Gagliano del Capo the view sweeps over the vastness of the sea and, on a clear day, reaches as far as the coasts of Greece and Albania. Part of Gagliano is the famous locality of Ciolo, known for its fjord, a high rocky inlet, and for its sea caves of great scenic interest. Gagliano, however, is not only nature and sea: it also has an ancient, fascinating heart, linked to the vicissitudes of the feudal lords who lived there and left, as a trace of their passage, the fortified walls and the castle. The historic centre is a maze in which small houses and imposing palaces alternate and under which is hidden a network of underground oil mills, many of which communicating: a city under the city that preserves the memory of ancient traditions.
