Child-proof Milan and Lombardy
3 minutes
The Milanese metropolis makes an impressive number of proposals available to young people and children. Planning and organising is enough.
A good idea is to assess the time available and decide whether to focus on relaxation, entertainment, cultural stimulation or a mix of everything. Within an hour or so it is easy to reach other destinations in Lombardy that are suitable for children.
In the Lombard capital with the little ones
Let's start with MUBA, the Museum of the Child, which since 2014 has been located at the Rotonda di via Besana, in the architectural areas of the deconsecrated church. The area has quite literally been reinvented, as it once included the former cemetery of the Ospedale Maggiore. In this permanent children's activity centre, there is no shortage of exhibitions, play and educational workshops and games for the little ones to enjoy.
Also of interest are the Municipal Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium, historical attractions at the Giardini di Porta Venezia. The former is very educational, especially for older children, because it has permanent palaeontology exhibitions, dioramas dedicated to different habitats and various educational activities. The Planetarium, on the other hand, is a place for dreaming: this is where your kids will spend their time upside down, recognising stars and planets.
Milan as seen by children, between castles, parks and museums
Sempione Park is a perfect urban green area for those who want to do sports or simply walk or cycle around. It is an excellent location, even for those who simply want to shoot a few balls on the grass.
If it is the underwater world that drives your children crazy, then the perfect venue is the Civic Aquarium, with shapes, lights and colours reminiscent of the sea.
Anyone wanting to take a leap back in time can choose the Sforza Castle, with its Egyptian and armour museum, a favourite with children.
Then there is the Archaeological Museum, which has a new display also designed for children. The Triennale Kids, on the other hand, is perfect for introducing children to the world of design. To end on a high note, one could head for the Museum of Comics.
Do your children prefer playing or flying?
Leaving Milan, the next stop is Cormano, with the Toy and Children's Museum and its important vintage collections, all worth seeing.
Contemporary entertainment can be found in Treviglio with Explorazione and its distinctly interactive approach. This is the permanent laboratory housed in the Science Museum, which can be combined with another super adventurous stop: the one at Volandia. This is paradise for those who already know that they want to be airline pilots when they grow up.
The Flight Park and Museum in Somma Lombardo, in the province of Varese, is a perfect introduction to the world of aviation.
From prehistory to tarzaning
The next stop is Rivolta d 'Adda, in the province of Cremona, at the Prehistoric Park framed by the wooded riverbank. Several prehistoric species have been reconstructed for the occasion, but this is just one of the many attractions at the Adda.
Here, in fact, you can also sail and board the boats that sail up the river to Lake Como. Along the Martesana Canal, which connects the Adda river to Milan, you can walk past historic houses overlooking the canal.
Finally, three more useful places for an unforgettable trip to Lombardy.
The Mottolino Fun Mountain in Livigno is perfect in all seasons with the Bike Park where you can take freeride lessons or the high altitude walks at the Larix Park.
In Civenna, in the province of Como, there is the Jungle Raider Park, an adventure park with four tarzaning courses on Tibetan bridges, various obstacles and different levels of difficulty.
And finally, the Zavattarello Castle is located in the heart of the Pavia Oltrepò area and periodically offers re-enactments in medieval costumes and educational and recreational itineraries. This is without mentioning that among the halls of the fortress, the spirit of Count Pietro dal Verme roams, who died after being poisoned by his wife Chiara Sforza.
