Overview
Constructed with geometric sandstone blocks from Bagnatica, similar to those used to erect the towers in the oldest part of the city, the Tower of the Fallen in Bergamo has a square plan and consists of five floors, a terrace and a turret. It was unveiled in 1924. The Tower, originally an ornamental building, was therefore transformed into a monument dedicated to the memory of Bergamo's fallen soldiers of the First World War.
During the 20th century, many public events held around the Tower, together with the habit of Bergamo residents to meet, stroll and enjoy their free time in public places and along the viale del Sentierone, reinforced the role and functions of that area, which was increasingly experienced and understood as the new central area of the city. Standing alongside the older core of the upper city, the architectural complex became one of the symbols of modern Bergamo.
