Contemporary Rivodutri: an Open-Air Contemporary Art Museum in the Holy Valley
In Rivodutri, a small municipality of the Valle Santa of Rieti, contemporary art has escaped from museums and installed itself among the hamlets, woodlands and springs. Rivodutri Contemporanea is a project founded in 2012 and curated by Barbara Pavan. Each year new permanent works are added to an open-air trail that belongs to the community and is freely accessible to all.
Works around nature and spirituality
The installations enter into a dialogue with the most renowned local places. At the Chiesina di San Francesco al Faggio — the monumental beech tree associated with the passage of St Francis there is the Umor Vitae by Rossella Russo, a Tiffany stained-glass window inspired by local symbols. At the Springs of Santa Susanna, among the most abundant in Europe, flowing at a rate of 5,000 litres per second, Roberta Lozzi has created Fuente, a mural paying homage to the flow of water. Among the most recent works are Konseki by Japanese artist Yukoh Tsukamoto, and the mosaic Imagoracta.P by Monica Scafati.
How to Visit the Trail
This open-air museum (museo diffuso) is always open and free of charge. The works are scattered across the hamlets of Apoleggia and Piedicolle and in the main village. The best way to discover them is on foot: guided trails of approximately 10 kilometres are organised, combining art and the surrounding landscape.
