"To the Sound of the Trumpets" by Ozmo in Rieti: the first courthouse mural in Italy
The work created by Ozmo (born Gionata Gesi), a pioneer of Italian street art, is placed on a wall of the Rieti Court of Justice, in Piazza Bachelet. It is the first ever mural to adorn the wall of a courthouse in Italy. It was inaugurated in 2019 as part of the "Trame – Tracce di memoria" (Trame - Traces of Memory) project rolled out by the The Uncommon Factory creative agency.
Two classical works, a question of judgement
The work portrays the contrast between ascent and condemnation. Ozmo intertwined two visual sources linked to the local heritage. From the first, the Last Judgement by the Torresani brothers (a fresco in the Oratory of San Pietro Martire in Rieti), provides the hosts of saints fighting to save souls. From the second, Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women (1574-1580, Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence), comes the brutality of an abduction and the tension between struggling bodies. The result is a piece staging two opposing gestures—salvation and slavery—directly on the court’s façade.
