The Ceyrat Belvedere in Nemi: The Highest Point of the Town, Overlooking the Lake
At the highest point of Nemi, in Via Grotticella, the Ceyrat Belvedere offers one of the most expansive views of the Castelli Romani. The gaze sweeps from the rooftops of the town to across the volcanic lake, reaching as far as the Museo delle Navi Romane (Museum of Roman Ships) and the archaeological area of the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis. On clear days, you can even see the sea.
The Phenomenon of the Three Moons
Anyone finding themselves here on a full-moon night may witness a remarkable spectacle: the moon is reflected simultaneously in the lake and in the sea, creating the illusion of three moons — one in the sky, one on the surface of the lake, and one far off on the Tyrrhenian. The local inhabitants call it the “three moon phenomenon”.
A Name related to a twinning
The belvedere takes its name from Ceyrat, a small town in the Auvergne region of France with which Nemi has been twinned since 1989. Locally, it is also known as "Gli Ormetti". It can be reached by climbing up the lanes of the historic centre, or via CAI trail 511, which starts from Fontan Tempesta and crosses the Vallone Tempesta, one of the best-preserved woodlands in the Colli Albani area.
