Beyond the iconic cities and world-famous destinations, there is a deeper, more authentic Italy waiting to be discovered slowly through timeless landscapes, breathtaking views and spiritual journeys that speak to both the eyes and the soul.
The Ancient Paths of Italy project focuses on the Lazio sections of five renowned pilgrimage routes converging on Rome: the Via Francigena, the Via Romea Germanica, the Via Romea Strata, the Way of St Francis and the Way of Saint Benedict.
Where every step is an authentic experience
The project aims to promote these places and retrace the history of the peoples who helped shape the Eternal City and its surrounding territories.
Along the routes, you will find free Wi-Fi hotspots and innovative smart guides working in synergy with the Italia.it app.
These stations send push notifications directly to your smartphone: you will receive a welcome message, technical information about each stage, a list of nearby places of interest along your route, dedicated information sheets and videos for every POI.
The points of interest (POIs) suggested through the app are some of the hidden gems of the project, as at least 40% of them are outstanding sites rarely included in international tourist circuits. All of this is designed to create an immersive and original experience of the region’s tourism offering.
The Ancient Paths of Italy project also includes a series of free bus tours. On the Italia.it app, the Paths feature dedicated markers corresponding to selected locations, highlighting opportunities to join the bus tours. By clicking on the markers, you will see tour dates, timetables, departure points and intermediate stops.
The tours are organised in different formats, each following a narrative thread designed to connect the POIs through a unique logical, historical-dramaturgical and sensory journey.
