Pre-Raphaelites: Modern Renaissance

Overview

From 24 February to 30 June 2024 the Church of San Giacomo and the large rooms that formed the library of the Convent of San Domenico in Forlì will play host to 320 pieces of Italian and international artists who tell of the far-reaching influence of Italian art, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, on the artistic movement that revolutionised Victorian England: the Pre-Raphaelites, an artistic movement started by a few rebellious artists – William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti – who aimed to revitalise English painting, considered to be in decline due to the excessively formal and strict standards imposed by the Royal Academy.

Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, furniture, ceramics, glass and metal works, textiles, medals, illustrated books, manuscripts and jewellery, organised in an exhibition directed by Gianfranco Brunelli and curated by  Elizabeth Prettejohn, Peter Trippi, Francesco Parisi and Cristina Acidini, with Tim Barringer, Stephen Calloway, Charlotte Gere, Véronique Gerard Powell and Paola Refice, highlighting the strong impact that, between the 1840s and 1920s, historical Italian art, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, had on British visual culture.
