On the wine route from Ora to the San Lugano Pass

Old Val di Fiemme Railway Cycle Route

Typology
cycling route
Duration
1 day
Number of Stages

Difficulty
Medium

The 27-km route follows the old Val di Fiemme railway, an important World War I supply line. It then passes through pristine nature reserves, like the Castelfeder biotope or the smallest and most species-rich nature park in South Tyrol, the Monte Corno Nature Park.

From Ora to San Lugano cyclists can enjoy unique views of the entire South Tyrolean Unterland area. Particularly interesting is the connection with wine, especially Pinot Noir and the indigenous Lagrein variety. It is no coincidence that big names like Pfitscher, Castelfeder, Girlan, and Thaler, etc. are grown here. Passing through beautiful orchards and vineyards, you can visit the historic wine villages of Ora, Pinzano, Montagna and Fontanefredde until you reach the San Lugano Pass.

From Ora to Passo di San Lugano

The tour starts at Ora train station. From here, head towards the village centre with its maze of alleyways until you reach Montagna, with its ancient ruins and Castelfeder biotope. Tip: the Castelfeder ruins are worth a visit, but because of the difficult terrain, park your bike at the foot of the hill and continue on foot.

Towards San Lugano Pass

Towards San Lugano Pass

Continue along the Castelfeder road towards the “Sentiero panoramico - Panoramaweg” (Panoramic Trail), past the Glener viaduct, through a series of tunnels, and treat yourself to a visit to Enn Castle and Doladizza farms before reaching the final destination, the San Lugano Pass. After some tasty local fare, you can return along the same route, this time almost entirely downhill.
