After a visit to the evocative Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Acquapendente, whose splendid crypt symbolically reproduces the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and offers a moment of contemplation before departure, the Via Romea Strata leg resumes in a southerly direction through gentle hills and wide agricultural spaces.
The path leads to San Lorenzo Nuovo, a neat and scenic village overlooking the lake from above. From here, one of the first unforgettable views of Lake Bolsena opens up: a tranquil expanse of water that fills the ancient volcanic crater, with its islands emerging on the horizon. San Lorenzo Nuovo is also a strategic point to break up the stage, thanks to the services available in the village.
Leaving the town, you begin the descent into the volcanic crater. The route becomes particularly pleasant: dirt tracks and farm roads alternate with secondary paved stretches, in a continuous and gentle up and down between silvery olive groves, open meadows and small woods. The lake often remains in the background, accompanying the walker with ever-changing views and the feeling of slowly approaching the destination.
The arrival in Bolsena is gradual and evocative: the outline of the village stands out above the water, inviting you to end the day among its medieval streets and the lakeside promenade.
Please note: refreshment and water points are only available in San Lorenzo Nuovo; it is therefore advisable to set off well stocked, especially in the warmer months.
