Leaving Bolsena, the Via Romea Strata route resumes among neat olive groves and patches of Mediterranean scrub, gradually moving away from the shores of Lake Bolsena. The route alternates between dirt roads and tracks, with continuous ups and downs that make the stage dynamic but never monotonous. Behind you, the lake offers ever-changing views: its calm waters accompany the pilgrim for much of the route, offering highly evocative scenic breaks.
As you proceed south, the landscape opens up to gentle cultivated hills and more shaded stretches, until you catch a glimpse in the distance of the profile of Montefiascone, perched in a dominant position. The arrival is particularly exciting: from the Torre del Pellegrini the view encompasses a 360° panorama, ranging from the lake to the Tuscia countryside and, on clear days, to the more distant hills. It is one of those moments when the effort melts away in the beauty of the landscape.
Please note: water can only be obtained in the first part of the route; it is advisable to set off with a good supply, especially in the hottest periods.
