Altamura

Overview

A city of ancient palaces, churches and cloisters, Altamura is known throughout Italy and beyond for its famous bread: baked in wood-burning ovens and prepared according to ancient tradition, it has a taste and fragrance that are not easily forgotten, so much so that it became the first baked product in Europe to obtain the PDO mark.

While outside the city centre, in the surrounding countryside, the fossils of what is known as the 'Man of Altamura', a human skeleton dating back to the Palaeolithic period, have been found, the heart of the city is a treasure chest containing architecture of great artistic value, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Apulian Romanesque mixed with elegant Frederician Gothic, a jewel of rare beauty.
