Church of San Giorgio in Acquate

Overview

Don Abbondio's churchyard from The Betrothed

Following in the footsteps of the characters from The Betrothed, Alessandro Manzoni's literary masterpiece, we arrive in Acquate. Bathed by the waters of Lake Lecco, this district is home to the Church of San Giorgio, where the fearful Don Abbondio was to have celebrated the wedding of the two star-crossed lovers, Renzo and Lucia.

Founded in 1232 and enlarged on several occasions and at different times, it is one of the oldest and largest churches in the parish of Lecco. The structure has a frugal architecture, with a gabled façade and a single nave with exposed wooden trusses. In addition, the original small bell tower is still intact, built in the 15th century. You can visit the Church of San Giorgio in Acquate every day in Piazza Sagrato Don Abbondio, 1.

After visiting the church, treat yourself to a tour of this beautiful village of Manzonian storytelling. Enjoy the peace and quiet of its streets and reach the Lungolago di Lecco for the sunset: a spectacle is guaranteed.
