The sanctuary of Poggio Bustone is one of the religious complexes built along the route of St Francis’s pilgrimage, like others in the Holy Rietina Valley: those of Greccio, Fonte Colombo and La Foresta. It was here, in 1208, that St Francis’s community adventure began. The sanctuary stands on the lower slopes of Mount Rosato, in a panoramic position above Poggio Bustone. Founded in 1235–37, it comprises a late 14th-century church dedicated to St James the Greater, with a cloister that still retains some of its original columns and remains of frescoes (a 15th-century Madonna and Child from the Umbrian-Tuscan school, and Stories of the Saint, from the 17th century).
A half-hour walk up a steep slope leads to the hermitage of St Francis, a place of retreat and prayer. Of the complex, only the church of St James is currently open to visitors.
