In the heart of a rich agricultural area, Poggio Mirteto belonged to the monks of Farfa in the 10th century and later to some of the most powerful medieval families in the region (the Farnese, the Orsini, the Mattei and the Bonaccorsi), before becoming part of the papal possessions.
Today, the village retains its mediaeval character, as can be seen in the still well-preserved walls and the narrow streets that have an ancient feel. Among the churches, the thirteenth-century S. Paolo, with its bell tower and crypt, is worth seeing. The Cathedral, on the other hand, in the modern part of the town, was built between 1641 and 1725 and has a terracotta façade.
