Piazza dei Murales in Cassino: a car park turned into an open-air art gallery
Piazza dei Murales is located behind the Town Hall of Cassino, on Via Tommaso Piano. It used to be an unremarkable car park, but since 2021 the building façades have become canvases for nationally renowned artists, and today it is one of the most photographed spots in the city.
How the square came about
It all started with the second edition of the "Ammuri Street Art Festival", where each mural illustrates one of the UN's 2030 Agenda goals: renewable energy, freedom of expression, the right to movement. The square has also earned a second name — "The Rights District".
Artworks and the Fuksas building
The murals cover the façades of the building designed by Massimiliano Fuksas between 1985 and 1990. Among the works, "Rigenerazione" (Regeneration) by Tina Loiodice and Marcello Russo is dedicated to climate change. The paints used are AirLite, which can absorb pollutants through sunlight. Therefore painting a wall is, in practice, the equivalent of planting dozens of trees.
Practical information
It is about a 10-minute walk from the train station. The venue also hosts cultural events and concerts.
