From Tarvisio to Venzone

From Tarvisio to Venzone

The Italian section, 175 km long and divided into three stages, starts in Tarvisio and crosses the mountainous part, following a disused railway. From here, head for the picturesque Val Canale, crossing Pontebba and enjoying views of the 13th-century abbey of Moggio Udinese. The Fella river course takes you to the ancient town of Venzone.

From Venzone to Udine

From Venzone to Udine

From Venzone, proceed south to Gemona del Friuli, a picturesque village with castle, characteristic historic buildings, churches and museums. Gemona is a crossroads of cycle routes connecting the Alpe Adria and Tagliamento River from north to south and the Pedemontana cycle route from east to west.

Following the Tagliamento river, pass through Osoppo, whose fortress was declared a "national monument" in 1923.

Once in the Upper Friulian Plain, you can ride the cycle paths to the centre of Udine, where ancient history mixes with legend, and where Attila is the architect of the castle hill overlooking the centre.

The route continues through picturesque villages bordered by Venetian villas, to Palmanova, a UNESCO heritage fortified city.

Continue to Cervignano del Friuli, where the route joins the Adriatic Sea Cycle Route. From here, a cycle path leads you to the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia, a UNESCO heritage site. The last stop before the sea is Grado, a famous seaside resort where you can lose yourself in Byzantine art and seascapes.
