Greek Theatre

Overview

The thrill of immortal plays

A symbol of the city and one of the most evocative monuments of the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, the Greek Theatre of Syracuse will enchant you with its grandeur and ancient history. Reach it on the southern side of the Temenite hill, where the cavea was excavated in the 5th century BC Its 15,000 seats, spread over 67 orders of steps, were occupied not only by citizens eager to witness the staging of tragedies and comedies, but also by participants in city assemblies.

Its importance did not diminish even under the Romans, who modified the structure to adapt it to their needs. Today, the Greek Theatre of Syracuse is listed as UNESCO world heritage. Since the early twentieth century, and particularly the performance of Aeschylus' Agamemnon in 1914, the great works of ancient drama have once more been staged here. Treat yourself to the unique thrill of watching immortal plays in a breathtaking setting.
