Introducing Mount Pellegrino, which dominates the Conca d’Oro landscape from above. Its 609 metres tower majestically into the sky, making it stand out against the other reliefs. It is the sacred mountain of Palermo, where the Basilian monks chose to live as hermits in the caves. Today, there are 134 caves, marine and karstic in origin. The most striking include the Addaura Caves, where you can admire engravings from the Upper Palaeolithic period.
Mount Pellegrino is part of the Oriented Nature Reserve and offers unique views of the Gulf of Mondello and the Gulf of Palermo. At the Belvedere di Monte Pellegrino lookout, inside a rock ravine, stands the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, a natural, religious pilgrimage destination. At 458 metres above sea level, you can find a bronze statue of the saint on a small limestone hill.
