Torre Salsa

Overview

A natural oasis of peace

An area of 762 hectares of pristine wilderness: Torre Salsa is a protected nature reserve located in the municipality of Siculiana, in the province of Agrigento. It has been under the management of WWF Italy since 2000.

The Regional Nature Reserve protects around six kilometres of coastline, among cliffs and beaches. Within the wetland, at the heart of the Reserve is the ancient Torre Salsa watchtower, which dominates the surrounding landscape from the top of a small, clay promontory.

The territory of the Reserve is characterised by flourishing flora and fauna. Here, stretches of coastline are dominated by blue clays, limestone stratifications with chalk banks, sheer cliffs and coastal sand dunes. These environments are home to dozens of animal species, such as porcupine, while the beaches are an ideal breeding ground for the loggerhead sea turtle.
