We get back on our way along an ancient Roman road uphill, through a splendid forest reserve, that has been hosting the Certosa di Trisulti for eight centuries. Commissioned in 1204 by Pope Innocenzo III, the Monastery is a Carthusian architectural jewel, which preserves several works of art and an extraordinary seventeenth-century Pharmacy. Below the Certosa, inside a cave, we discover the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Cese. Finally, we reach our destination, the Abbey of Casamari, a magnificent, rare example of Cistercian Gothic in Italy, with its breathtaking multi-pillared church. A community of monks lives in the Abbey, practicing hospitality and evocative religious functions accompanied by Gregorian chants.
