The penultimate stage runs through the Melfa Gorges, a wild area of eagle nests and rock hermitages from the early Christianity, such as the Eremo dello Spirito Santo. Past the panoramic village of Santopadre, the only inhabited centre on the route, we descend into the bottom of the gorges. There, we continue along the Tracciolino, an ancient Bourbon Road, up to Roccasecca, whose castle was the birthplace of San Tommaso d’Aquino around 1225. After entering the beautiful historic centre, welcomed by a huge statue of the Saint, we pay a visit to the oldest church in the world dedicated him.
